Why marijuana should lose the “drug” label

Introduction

The problems of smoking exist far and wide all around the world. Though it is considered bad, some forms of smoking might actually prove to be good for our health. Marijuana is one such drug whose medicinal properties outweigh the negative effects. In spite of such value in the medicinal field, Marijuana is branded as a drug in most parts of the world including the United States.

What Exactly Is Marijuana?

Marijuana is a leaf belonging to the Cannabis Sativa family. It’s green grayish in colour and is called in various names such as pot, grass, bud, weed, herb, ganja, Mary Jane etc. These are the street names of this plant when it is used as a drug. The importance of marijuana lies in its certain intoxicating features. The chemical with the psychoactive nature in the marijuana plant is called the delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol(THC). The chemical alters the state of the mind when brought in contact with the air. This is found in the resin of the leaves and in the buds of the female cannabis plant.

There are around 100 different chemical substances which are similar to the THC called the Cannabinoids. Still there are around 400 different chemicals which store some medicinal value in them. Below are the reasons to use marijuana as a cure

1. Medical Marijuana as a cure for the Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s is one of the most common diseases in the world. Even with the medical advancement in the 21st century we have not been able to take out a solution for this disease. It is a type of dementia disease, where one starts to fend off memory and tends to forget even the daily routine activities. But certain cannabinoids in marijuana plant delay the production of Beta amyloid proteins which are known to be the primary cause of Alzheimers. If taken in correct quantities over a certain period of time, marijuana is effective in even reversing and curing the Alzheimer disease.

2. Mental health conditions

Certain mental conditions like Schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) affect the brain and it’s functioning. Schizophrenia is a condition where one experiences hallucinations, fright and anxiety. Post traumatic stress disorder is a shocked state of mind developed after witnessing certain gruesome scenes. Both these diseases interfere in the working of brain.
Here certain chemicals of the marijuana plant help in calming down the state of mind due to the light use of the intoxicating THC. They reduce high anxiety levels by clearing out the brain for a certain duration. But care should be taken that it is not consumed in higher than prescribed quantity which can lead to repercussions.

3. Eating disorders

Eating disorders like anorexia and binge eating are stimulated by the chemicals in the brain. Anorexia is a condition where the person tends to do dieting even when they are malnourished. The thought of gaining weight due to food consumption leads them to crash dieting where the body is starved of even the regular basic nutrients. Binge eating on the other hand leads to excessive eating, even when the stomach is full.

These disorders usually happen when the brain is not under control and certain thoughts cloud our mind. Here, the Marijuana can stimulate the metabolism in Anorexia condition making the person eat more. It can relax the mental thoughts during binge eating forcing the person to stop eating gradually.

4. Nausea

Nausea is a vomiting feeling when there is voluntary or involuntary emptying of stomach through the mouth forcefully. Certain chemicals in the brain tend to mix up and contract the muscles forcing the materials in the stomach to come out. Research proves that certain synthetic cannabinoids in the marijuana drug tend to stop these chemicals from mixing and can give some interim relief.
The cannabinoids block certain communication signals in the brain stems, transmitted by the blood cells from the stomach to the brain, which in turn stop the muscle contraction preventing the nausea feeling.

5. Multiple sclerosis

The brain, spinal cord and the optic nerves in the eyes are affected in the multiple sclerosis condition. There are muscle spasms, extreme contractions which can cause great pain and can affect the daily life of the person.

The THC in the marijuana plant helps in relaxing the muscle contractions and some uncontrolled muscle movements. They ease the bladder muscles, the nerves present in the brain and certain spinal cord muscles. But the results are not instantaneous and can take up to several weeks for the pain to subside fully.

6. Pain

Pain can be anywhere, be it the muscle or a nerve or just a headache. Anything causing uneasiness results in pain. The THC in the marijuana plant and its related cannabinoids show some medicinal properties which are known to relieve pain, sometimes instantly and sometimes over a certain period of time.

The muscle pains in the body are relaxed when in contact with the cannabis chemicals, used during nausea and vomiting. They are also useful in treating the muscle spasms by greatly relaxing and freeing them. Marijuana also relives the anxiety in brain, which is the cause for most diseases.

Conclusion

With a great number of medicinal values, the marijuana plant should definitely lose the drug label. Certain laws should be enforced for its careful use in the medical field where most people can benefit from it. The correct use of marijuana can make it more of a cure rather than a drug.
